An old home on Pearl Street in Jeffersonville has gotten a new lease on life.
It’s still a house, sure. But instead of being a home for a family, it’s now a home for 24 taps pouring beer from local and regional breweries alike as the Pearl Street TapHouse. That’s after months of work by Kelly Conn and Teri Taylor, the owners of the business.
The building has come a long way.
“When I walked in, I found it looked like a haunted house inside,” said Conn.
There was no electricity, missing glass, holes in the floor, etc. In fact, the structure had been considered for demolition at one point before nonprofit Jeffersonville Main Street Inc. received a grant to move it from 229 Pearl St. to its current location at 407 Pearl St.
Since then, the 126-year-old structure has gotten a new roof, floors, drywall, wiring and other upgrades. Some of those costs were covered by the Main Street grant. But Conn and Taylor also invested plenty themselves in getting it ready.
Conn declined to give a specific dollar figure, but he said it was in the hundreds of thousands of dollars.
The building is owned by Jeffersonville Main Street, and Conn and Taylor are leasing it. Under terms of the lease, they have the first right of refusal when the structure is sold, he said.
“We have tried to save every last architectural bit of the house as humanly possible,” Conn said. “She’s an old girl, but she’s got new clothes.”
Conn said many people still have fond memories from the house. A few people have stopped by and told him they used to live there. One person even told him that his parents shared their first kiss in that house … aww.
You can take a look at how the old home has been restored and transformed in the attached slideshow.
Pearl Street TapHouse is open to the public. You can find a list of its brews here, and you’ll note there’s a big focus on Indiana breweries. In addition to beer, it also has a full menu, which includes sandwiches such as baked Philly cheesesteak ($9) or a burger with a Sriracha bourbon glaze ($12). The menu also includes several cocktails, in case you’re not that into beer.
